Passion, Purpose, Profits

Over the last couple of decades, I’ve been lucky enough to be involved with over 100 businesses run by clients, partners and well, just me.

When I look back and examine the failures and the successes, a clear pattern emerges:

  • Those businesses we started just to make us money and create financial freedom did neither, and eventually failed.
  • When we created something because we were passionate about the cause, and would happily have done it for free, it worked out well each time.

If we thought something would make us rich, we were basing that on evidence from other people. We were transfixed with their success, not the potential for ours. This guy we knew was doing well at it, so why couldn’t we? Or we said, “that industry’s booming right now, so let’s get on the gravy train”.

Guess what? Whenever we jumped on a gravy train, the gravy turned cold and lumpy, and we couldn’t wait to pour it down the sink.

If you work at an idea only because you think it’s going to make you rich, you’ll always under-perform, and you’ll always be looking for a way out.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pursue profit – in fact you absolutely should, and like crazy – but you have to start with something that lights a raging fire inside you.

Get happy. Get fulfilled. Get rich.
