Happiness

Clarity coach Stuart Carter threw out a nugget of wisdom when he wrote about our tendency to defer happiness until something else happens. Like a new car, a financial goal or a bit of weight loss.

This reminds me of a line in the classic pop song Baker Street:

“Just one more year and then you’d be happy”

Here’s the thing, of course – you can be happy no matter what. You can stop feeling bad about where you are, and instead rejoice in the journey.

Having “owned” supercars, overseas villas and designer clothes, I can tell you there was no correlation between those things and my happiness. Not even slightly.

As Carter observes:

The answer isn’t to get the fancy car, lose the weight or get the smarter clothes; the answer is to remove the link between the problem and the perceived solution.
