Dance: The Neuroscience

Music (and dance) are known to influence health through neurochemical changes in the following four domains:

(i) reward, motivation and pleasure;

(ii) stress and arousal;

(iii) immunity; and

(iv) social affiliation

Dance (as compared to just music) also includes the all-round benefits that physical activity provides to the body and mind.

Dance Therapy has also been used to reduce stress and anxiety because it uses non-verbal interaction. According to the Dana Foundation, “Sustained training in music, dance or other arts strengthens the brain’s attention system, which in turn may improve cognition more generally.”

So, the science is clear: dancing makes you happier, healthier and more productive.
